A pretty good idea...

I went to hear Sasha and Digweed, two old-school house DJ's, spin at Club Ibiza on Saturday (my photo above). It was awesome, 500 people jumping up and down, hands in the air. Yes, I am technically too old for this kind of thing, however S&D are my generation, and I used to dance to them when they played in UK clubs in the very early 90's, and I was desperate for an "old school" night out and I am not ready to give it up quite yet!

But anyway, I digress. While we were waiting in line to get in to the building, a girl from the club walked through the line and asked us each for our email addresses which she typed into some kind of small tablet PC thing. She used the occasion to give us a bit of banter, NOT like a "Hi, welcome to Ibiza!" script, at all, but a very short greeting.

I thought to myself, that's pretty clever, not just getting everyone's emails to market to later, but also using the opportunity to shoot the breeze with people. This would be useful for an event open to the public as well as to pre-registered members, but the point is you could use that time while people are stuck waiting in line to interact and engage with them (while bearing in mind that less is more!).

For those of you who would like a taster of what the event was like, here's a video of them spinning (New Years Eve 2007, no idea where), but it's almost identical to the atmosphere of the club this weekend. BE WARNED though, it shows "young people having fun" and some of those "dreaded repetitive beats", so you gotta just roll with it and/or ignore if this is not your thing! But my friend Vic and I had a really incredible time so I thought I would share, and post it here for posterity's sake.

  4. where's the technical manual that says you're too old by its standards? burn it. just wait til I get my assocation/new media gang together for karaoke and or irish pub drinking games. we shall be young forever.

although I have to say I'm terrified of the whole seeing Duran Duran for the first time in almost 25 years thing next month.
