Heard this on the ASAE listserves:
"If an organization doesn’t innovate, it dies. We have changed a great deal over the years. How do we continue to innovate? How do we continue to broaden our scope? We have to look at our decisions through the lens of how we can continue to innovate. How do we get our members involved in innovation? How do we get members to participate in [the organization's] future? Can we have our members provide info to us – have a contest, they tell us what we need to do to innovate, change."
This association will announce this at their annual meeting and put out a call for ideas from their members. What a great way to get people involved, especially perhaps people who don't usually interact all that much with the long-standing committees or activities of the association, and to get people thinking about the value of their association (to them, to the field, to the community) and how to continuously engage with it and help making it better through their own participation.
Awesome.

Hey Maddie,
Personally I think that this is a great idea. However I have heard from a number of associations lately that their awards programs are really struggling and they are having a hard time getting people to either submit nominations or put themselves up for an award. Lack of nominees leads to lackluster winners and an overall decrease in the value of the awards program. I would love to know if other associations feeling this or just the ones I have spoken to.
Have a good 4th!
That's very true! However, I think that the idea of an innovation award might actually draw in those people (maybe younger members, too, although not exclusively) who feel normally fairly unengaged. I guess the trick is to make it really exciting to participate - but I agree that if there is apathy about an awards program in general, it may be difficult.
