I'm getting a bit worried about duplication of effort.

It seems that all of a sudden, everyone wants to get on the social media bandwagon, which of course, would be awesome, except for one little problem. People seem to be forgetting the most important step - you have to start by listening.

This blindingly awesome post by Qui Diaz on the Buzz Bin illustrates my point perfectly. She describes how she's heard of several people planning the same kind of social network. Now, of course there's no reason why a hub of networks and groupsites and Facebook groups can't co-exist quite happily. BUT, if you are planning on starting a new one, it's really in your best interest to see what's already out there, what you might be able to enhance by adding your collaborative efforts to, what might benefit from resources (time, money, enthusiasm, whatever) you could bring to the table. Sharing and collaboration is what it's all about!

I'm seeing this in several different areas, particularly with groups specifically related to social media. Is this the start of more turf wars and silos? Wouldn't that defeat the whole purpose of everything?

Be smart. Share. Collaborate. Be strategic. Alliance build!

Who was it that said everything you need to know you learned in kindergarten...?

  1. Right on, sister! Of course, everyone forgets the ULTIMATE question... Does it really apply to your company? WHY are you using social media? Do not blog for the sake of blogging - have a REAL conversation! Don't start a facebook group because you THINK you should - have a PURPOSE in mind. Focus your efforts in particular areas of SM that actually HELP your members...
