ReplyDeleteThis argument reminds me of when I moved to consulting from software development in the late 90's. People going round and round about planning vs. strategy vs. process. While words are important, I finally concluded that planning is useless unless it leads to action. Just saying the "process itself is valuable" is insufficient. I'm always amazed at how people in organizations seems to resist strategic thinking about what they should be doing. It's usually because they're too busy just putting one foot ahead of the other. That's why you find so many strategic planning exercises being facilitated by consultants - not by fulltime staff - and why it's often managed as a separate project from the regular day to day business of the organization. Sometimes you just have to sit back and think objectively about some things without getting lost in the weeds. But to then blame a lack of change on the strategic planning process itself is also an error. If an organization doesn't want to change, it ain't gonna change unless its back is to the wall and a gun is to its head.
