Chris Brogan just posted a good reminder about how bloggers can use Alltop.
This is a good reminder that for you, though, Alltop should be on your list of the five first things to do to start listening - find the blogs on your field or industry, and see what they are talking about. (Can you guess what the other four are? Hint - the answers can be found on the SocialFish website.)
They have changed their home page and I'm not sure the new layout is very easy to navigate now, for us niche bloggers and association/non-profit people, so here's Nonprofit, here's Social Media, here's social entrepreneurship, here's health, here's marketing, just to get you started. Search for your industry and see what you find; they add topics all the time.
Happy listening!

Thanks for the post, you help hit home how important Alltop can be.
I loved Chris' post as well. I never really thought of using Alltop as a research channel, but now it makes me think back to when you had to do research papers and there was that large magazine rack in the library, but much easier.
Also, if your industry doesn't have a channel, but you have some quality bloggers, there is a possibility to start a new channel. Getting in touch with Alltop seems to be pretty easy via Twitter. I think there is the start of an underground movement (by movement I mean me and Maggie thought it would be cool) to have an association social media channel since there are so many wonderful association people blogging about it. What do you think?
I think an "association" channel in general would be really useful, since I searched for it and there was nothing - but there's a ton of us! Go for it, I say, and yes, they are very accommodating... :)
@Lynn I'll bet you that between the two of us they'll add it! Just ask anyone who knows me--I am legendary for my pestiness!
